Search Engine results differ from referrers

Posted by ianh [December 1, 2004]

Looking at search engines for a period MT shows searches for Google 154, Yahoo.com 53, MSN.com 6 etc.

Looking at the same period for referrers, MT reports 16 different Google domains, totalling 194 visits; yahoo.com 54, msn.com 6 and msn.co.uk 10.

Shouldn't these two sets of figures agree? It would be useful if they did.

Search Engine results differ from referrers

They shouldn't always agree exactly as their are situations where traffic can come from those domains that aren't searches. For example, if someone sends an email with a link to your web site to a Yahoo mail account. When clicking on this link from Yahoo's web mail, the referring domain will be yahoo.com but this should not register as a search.

I will be releasing detailed information soon on how to update the definitions so if you don't like the way I have them setup, you can always change them. :)

Search Engine results differ from referrers

Point taken, but I would think that all the different Google sites should register as search engines.

Anyway, maybe the ability to edit the definitions will resolve this.
